Principal Investigator

Susan G. Kornstein, M.D. is the Executive Director of the Mood Disorders Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is Professor of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology and Director of Clinical Research for VCU's Department of Psychiatry.


Dr. Kornstein is a nationally recognized researcher and thought leader with expertise in depression, anxiety, and women's mental health. She has published extensively on these topics and serves on a number of related advisory boards and consensus panels.

Over the past ten years, Dr. Kornstein has conducted more than 50 clinical trials for companies including Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Forest Laboratories, Eli Lilly, Glaxo SmithKline, Pharmacia & Upjohn, Berlex, Novartis, Merck, and Wyeth.

Areas of research include: major depressive disorder, chronic depression, geriatric depression, melancholic depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, sexual dysfunction, premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Dr. Kornstein has developed a reputation for meeting patient enrollment requirements and completing studies in a timely manner, with strict adherence to protocols and regulations.

A graduate of Brown University Medical School, she completed her residency and fellowship at VCU's Medical College of Virginia campus. Her awards and honors include VCU Women in Medicine Award, YWCA Outstanding Woman of the Year Award in Health and Science, Maimonides Society of Richmond Distinguished Service Award, and the MCV Foundation "Salute to Discovery" Research Scientist Award. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists. Dr. Kornstein is included in "Best Doctors in America" and was voted "Best Psychiatrist for Women" in Richmond Magazine.



Our Staff

The Mood Disorders Institute employs a well-rounded and highly trained team to manage clinical studies on a full-time basis. Our study coordinators are licensed healthcare professionals with an average of ten years of research experience. Our team also includes study physicians, clinical raters, and a business manager to handle budgetary and contractual matters.


Our Location and Facilities

Strategically located in the heart of the Greater Richmond region, the Mood Disorders Institute draws upon a population of over 1 million to recruit appropriate study subjects from diverse age, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.

The Institute offers the combined strength of its resources and the additional clinical facilities available through our affiliated teaching hospital, the VCU Medical Center.

The Institute facility is equipped with secure storage, EKG, laboratory and freezer storage capabilities, a dedicated monitor office with dial-up and high-speed Internet access, and free parking. Our off-campus location is convenient to Richmond International Airport, lodging and restaurants.

MDI utilizes Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB), the oldest and most experienced independent IRB in the United States, to review all research.
